10 Tips for Buying Art for Your Home

Decorating your home is a deeply personal endeavour. It’s a way that you can express your unique tastes and interests. One of the most striking ways to infuse character into your living space is through art. Whether you're a seasoned art collector or just starting to explore this world, here are my ten tips on buying art for your home or office.

1. Follow Your Heart, Not the Trends

Trends come and go, so automatically buying what is currently the talk of the art world isn’t necessarily the right approach. Trust your instincts and choose art that resonates with you. You'll be living with it every day, so it should be something that speaks to your soul and catches your eye.

2. Consider the Space

Before you go out looking for that special painting take a good look at the space you're seeking artwork for.
Consider factors like size, lighting, and existing colour schemes. A group of different-sized paintings might be perfect for a spacious living room as might a single large artwork.  While a smaller, painting could be just the thing for an office, bedroom, kitchen or snug.

3. Mix It Up

Don't be afraid to mix different styles, mediums, eras, and topics. Eclectic combinations can create a dynamic, visually stimulating environment through the contrast of styles.

You also can introduce variety with different frames for each painting instead of matching ones. A great tip; from a professional experienced framer I know and use myself; is to frame the artwork in a colour and style that suits the painting, rather than match to the ones that you already have. The artwork will then always look its absolute best.

4. Support Emerging Artists

If you purchase a painting from a local or lesser-known artist, not only do you get a unique work, but you're also supporting the creative journey of someone who's pouring their heart and soul into their craft.

5. Set a Budget

Art can range from affordable prints to high-end originals. Determine your budget before you start shopping, and remember, there's beautiful art available at every price point. Don't be discouraged if you're not in the market for a masterpiece.

Artists may be able to offer other options such as limited signed prints if an original artwork isn’t currently in your price point range.

They may also offer short-term payment plans if you ask. I’m now able to offer a payment plan of 2/3 installments over a two to three-month period and my clients receive their painting when I’ve had the last installment.

Gift vouchers are also an option as friends and family can purchase gift vouchers for you from an artist that you follow. A great birthday or Christmas present for an art lover :0))

6. Visit Galleries and Exhibitions

Immersing yourself in the art world can be incredibly inspiring. Visit galleries, attend exhibitions, and interact with artists whenever you can. You'll learn about different styles and may stumble upon something that truly captivates you.

7. Consider the Emotional Impact

Art has the power to evoke emotions and tell stories. Think about how a particular piece makes you feel. Does it inspire, comfort, or challenge you? Your emotional connection to a piece is often what makes it truly special and worthy of a place on your wall. I have written a short story of each of my Treevolutions paintings that may resonate with you or you might find your own stories within each artwork.

8. Think About Balance

Achieving balance in your art choices is key. If you have a bold, colourful painting, balance it against more subdued pieces. Mix larger artworks with smaller ones and; hang them off balance horizontally and vertically as in the example in the photo; rather than lined up regimentally and your eye will travel easily around the different paintings.

9. Don’t Rush

Finding the right pieces for your home can take time. Wait for pieces that truly resonate with you, whther its the colours the artist has used or the style and the topic. But when you see the one, remember it’s unique so don’t procrastinate and let another art lover beat you to it!

10. Have Fun and Be Adventurous

So there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to buying art. It's about finding paintings that you love, creating a space that brings you joy, and trusting your choices.

With these ten tips in mind, you're ready to go out and find art that truly reflects your unique personality and style. And as you’re reading this blog on my website do pop over and see what original paintings I have available in my art gallery. :0))
